Thanksgiving!!

I did it! I actually repeated my mom's Thanksgiving recipes without a hitch. When I gave my first Rotary presentation, you may remember that I suggested I make some homemade American food...and a Thanksgiving party was suggested by the president of the club, Celia Leach. Since that time, I have been coordinating with my mom over recipes and ingredients and after several weeks Thanksgiving was upon me. I first prepared a pumpkin pie and cake for my friends to celebrate Thanksgiving through a dessert party and then Friday November 24th, I woke up early and the real cooking began. I baked two pumpkin pies...one shown to the right, my mom's pork sausage stuffing, corn souffle, and the famous Cincinnati Ohio Skyline Chili dip. It was a long morning, but I must admit it was a lot of fun. I felt like Betty Crocker...in fact, my parents now refer to me as Katie Crocker...haha! I spent the afternoon at a fellow Rotarian's house where I filled out recipe cards, in case people actually enjoyed my food well enough to ask for a recipe. (Of course, my recipe was in the American cups and not the metric system and also contained degreees in fahrenheit.) The party, which was at the president's house, was truly a blast. She provided the turkey, cranberries, garlic bread, hot dogs, and several other food items and we decorated the table with a few American flags and other various items. Many people came to the party and it was just like I was home again surrounded by friends. Everyone was laughing, eating a ton, and having a good time...like any true Thanksgiving back in the states. All that was missing was the football games, haha, but instead I stayed over at a Rotarian's house and we did watch "I am a celebrity get me out of here." Not quite the same as football, but very humorous! I hope you are all well!

Guy Fawke's Night

These are pictures taken on Guy Fawkes' night. A long time ago, Guy Fawke's attempted to light parliament on fire and was caught and burned at the stake. Every year, the British celebrate the capture of Fawkes by lighting off fireworks and building bonfires. Some even build mini Guy dolls and throw them into the fire!! I went to this fireworks display with several of my friends and the international society, but there were fireworks going off all around the city. In fact, they were essentially going off all weekend leading up to this night. It was a great evening and a lot of fun!

Visit of RIBI President, Peter Offer

I do have a picture with Peter Offer! This is a picture taken the night of November 2 at the Newcastle Civic Center. The people in the photo are as follows: Front Row: (Left to Right) Misa and Yuka (ambassadorial scholars from Japan) RIBI President, Peter Offer, and 1030 Rotary Foundation Committee Ambassadorial Scholar Coordinator, Phil Hopps. Back Row: (Left to Right) myself, 1030 District Governor, George Craig, and President of Monkseaton Centenary, Celia Leach. Again, things are still going great. I am planning for Thanksgiving at the president's house and classes are going well. I have my first large presentation next Tuesday on whether media ownership directly influences media diversity. The University of Newcastle also recently invited me to meet the US Ambassador who will be visiting the university on November 17. I will let you know how it goes! I hope you are all doing well!

Trip to the Rotary Club of Durham

Hello Everyone! Sorry it has been a little bit since I last updated my blog. My computer caught an unfortunate cold and is currently making uploading new pictures quite difficult! However, things are going very well! This is a photo following my presentation at the Rotary Club of Durham with president Mr. Eddy Nicholson. It was a wonderful afternoon and everyone at the club was very welcoming and friendly! I have met so many amazing people! Following the wonderful afternoon in Durham, I attended a dinner reception in the Newcastle Civic Center with members of my host rotary club, Monkseaton Centenary, and several other clubs in district 1030 as we heard from the President of RIBI, Peter Offer. Mr. Offer spoke with me briefly and we exchanged business cards, but I forgot to ask for a picture! I am sorry, that would have been so fun to have a picture with the President! I hope you are all well and I will be in touch again soon! Until then, take care!
